  Do-it-Yourself Site Builders

I have seen people who are so desperate to get a website up, they are going with site builders and free templates.  There is nothing wrong with DIY but you need to be aware of the limitations as well as the benefits.  They're free, they're easy, why not?

Here's why: The vast majority of easy site building software provided through online providers does nothing to help your web presence.  Yep, that's true.  What the search engine often sees is in the box:

Nothing!  All sites are built with behind-the-scenes code.  How that code is read is very important.  If it's not read well, your site might as well be invisible.  Curious if your site is invisible?  Right click >View Page Source.  Your browser will open a new window.  Chances are, you won't see more than a few lines if your site was built with one of the free online site builders. And even if you do see some code there, odds are it's using the kind of code search engines dislike and penalize.

If nothing is there, it's because the actual code is encased a box called a "frame" that hides it so it can't be found by search engines.   You are invisible on purpose!  Even worse, if you got a domain or hosting through a code-builder type site you probably don't even own it.  Say you want to build a real site (once you realize you are not getting the hits you should be) you will likely find you don't even have ownership of your domain name (www.yourname.com).  You can check the whois data base and you'll discover that you may be paying for it, the Site Builder is the registered owner. The anguish you'll feel when you realize you've been marketing a site that is not really yours is quite painful.

Same goes for hosting - often site builders charge 10 times  what you'd pay for stand alone hosting - or you can display their advertisements (which is not very professional).  Not only are you paying for the convenience of doing all the work yourself, when the realization comes that you are overpaying or advertising for someone else and you want to move your site, you'll find it's been built using proprietary coding that is not moveable.  It HAS to be on their server, and likely no one else will even be able to use much of it to start over. You are trapped!  All your previous advertising and marketing has been in vain because if you don't own the site, the domain or the hosting - you don't have anything to show for all your time and any money spent.  While a custom, standard built site might be more initially, it's portable and flexible.  If you decide you don't like your designer - you can get a new designer a at any time and the new one will at least be able to work with the code and content you already have.

Site builders also have the added problems of browser incompatibility, page limits, and limited customization but that's more than we can get into here.  While it may be a quick way to get your site up fast, it can hurt your business in the long run.

Promote your business on a talk show.

Your local radio station or cable TV station may have programs that are looking for guests - a great low-cost way to promote your business! Business-related programs are ideal. Find out who the host is, and approach him or her as willing to share your expertise on a particular topic.

Call in programs are popular; you may be able to appear as a guest expert. If you're a mechanic, you might offer to take call-in questions on car maintenance; if you operate a health store, you might market yourself as an expert in herbal remedies. Have your proposal clearly worked out before you contact the program host, and make sure the parameters of your appearance, such as details about plugs, are clear beforehand.

Web store and Website Maintenance

If you have an interactive or content management site remember that part of owning a site like that means regular updates and bug fixes.  Neglecting maintenance may jeopardize the security or even the functionality of your site.  If your site uses:

  • Wordpress
  • Joomla
  • Expression Engine (prev. Pmachine)
  • Contribute
  • Website Baker
  • Drupal
  • phpBB
  • phpList
  • Zen Cart
  • OSCommerce
  • Other shopping carts & CMS'

or other "backend" software, there are often bug fixes and updates released that keep your site functioning and secure.  Neglecting these is not a good idea and can be more expensive in the long term than regular maintenance.  Just like a car engine your website needs regular "oil changes" to keep it running well.  Neglecting basic maintenance can cause your website "engine" to seize up, requiring a total rebuild at greater cost.

If your site uses one of these (and many other software "engines") we can update and secure the site at very reasonable rates.

Not sure if your computer is operating at maximum efficiency? Vista can let you know for sure. Just check out the Reliability and Performance Monitor, which you'll find at Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools > Generate a system health report. Windows will check your disk drives, drivers, services, software and hardware configuration, and more to give you a full accounting of what might be causing you trouble. If it finds a problem, it will explain it to you in detail and suggest how to resolve it.

Should I buy links in a Directory?

Google and most other search engines use links to determine reputation. A site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to it. Link-based analysis is an extremely useful way of measuring a site's value, and has greatly improved the quality of web search. Both the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of links count towards this rating.

However, some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass Page Rank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass Page Rank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

Not all paid links violate Google's guidelines. Buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results. Links purchased for advertising should be designated as such. This can be done in several ways, such as:

  • Adding a rel="nofollow" attribute to the <a> tag
  • Redirecting the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt file

Google works hard to ensure that it fully discounts links intended to manipulate search engine results, such excessive link exchanges and purchased links that pass Page Rank. If you see a site that is buying or selling links that pass Page Rank, let them know.  You'll help improve Google's algorithmic detection of such links.
